حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ أَيُّوبَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ مَرْثَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ ثُمَّ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ كَالْمُوَدِّعِ لِلْأَحْيَاءِ وَالْأَمْوَاتِ فَقَالَ «إنِّي فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ وَإِنَّ عَرْضَهُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْلَةَ إِلَى الْجُحْفَةِ وَإِنِّي لَسْتُ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُشْرِكُوا بَعْدِي وَلَكِنِّي أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا أَنْ تَنَافَسُوا فِيهَا فَتَفْشَلُوا فَتَهْلِكُوا كَمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ» فَكَانََ آخِرَ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed over the slain of Uhud, then ascended the pulpit, as if bidding farewell to the living and the dead, and said: “I am your forerunner at the cistern. Its width is between Ayla and al-Juhfa. I do not fear that you will associate partners after me, but I fear for you the world, that you will compete with each other over it, and thus falter, and thus perish, as those before you perished.” That was the last time I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ in the mosque.
