وَبِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ عِصْمَةَ قَالَ
قَدِمَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ بِإبِلٍ لَهُ فَلَقِيَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاشْتَرَاهَا مِنْهُ فَلَقِيَهُ عَلِيٌّ فَقَالَ مَا أَقْدَمَكَ؟ قَالَ قَدِمْتُ بِإِبِلٍ فَاشْتَرَاهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَنَقَدَكَ؟ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنْ بِعْتَهَا مِنْهُ بِتَأْخِيرٍ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ارْجِعْ فَقُلْ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إنْ حَدَثَ بِكَ حَدَثٌ مَنْ يَقْضِينِي مَالِي؟ وَانْظُرْ مَا يَقُولُ لَكَ فَارْجِعْ إِلَيَّ حَتَّى تُعْلِمَنِي فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إنْ حَدَثَ بِكَ حَدَثٌ فَمَنْ يَقْضِينِي؟ قَالَ «أَبُو بَكْرٍ» فَأَعْلَمَ عَلِيًّا فَقَالَ لَهُ ارْجِعْ اسْأَلْهُ إِنْ حَدَثَ بِأَبِي بَكْرْ حَدَثٌ فَمَنْ يَقْضِينِي؟ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ «عُمَرُ» فَجَاءَ فَأَعْلَمَ عَلِيًّا فَقَالَ لَهُ ارْجِعْ فَسَلْهُ إِذَا مَاتَ عُمَرُ فَمَنْ يَقْضِينِي؟ فَجَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «وَيْحَكَ إِذَا مَاتَ عُمَرُ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَمُتْ»

✧ A man from the desert arrived with some camels of his. The Messenger of God ﷺ met him and bought them from him. Then ʿAli met him and said, “What has brought you?” He said, “I arrived with camels, and the Messenger of God ﷺ bought them.” He said, “Did he pay you cash?” He said, “No, but you sold them to him on credit.” ʿAli said, “Go back and say to him: O Messenger of God, if something happens to you, who will pay me my money? And see what he says to you, then come back to me and tell me.” So he said, “O Messenger of God, if something happens to you, who will pay me?” He said: “Abu Bakr.” So he informed ʿAli, and ʿAli said to him, “Go back and ask him: if something happens to Abu Bakr, who will pay me?” So he asked him, and he said: “ʿUmar.” He came and informed ʿAli, and ʿAli said to him, “Go back and ask him: if ʿUmar dies, who will pay me?” So he came and asked him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Woe to you! If ʿUmar dies, then if you can die, then die.”
