✧ When the people began the Hajj in the year nine, ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a Muslim. He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to return to his people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I fear they will kill you.” He said, “If they found me sleeping, they would not wake me.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted him. He returned to his people as a Muslim. He presented a dinner, and Thaqīf came to greet him. He called them to Islam, but they suspected him, angered him, and made him hear what he had not expected. Then they left him until, when they had traveled by night and dawn broke, he stood upon a room in his house and called the adhān for prayer and testified. A man from Thaqīf shot him with an arrow and killed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The example of ʿUrwah is the example of the companion of Yāsīn: he called his people to Allah, and they killed him.”
