حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثَنَا بُكَيْرُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ أَنَّ عُتْبَةَ بْن فَرْقَدٍ ابْتَاعَ أَرْضًا بِشَطِّ الْفُرَاتِ فَاتَّخَذَهَا قَصَبًا فَلَمَّا أَتَى عُمَرَ ذَكَرَ أَنَّه ابْتَاعَ أَرْضًا فَقَالَ لَهُ «مِمَّنْ؟» قَالَ
مِن أَرْبَابِهَا فَلَمَّا كَان الْعَشِيُّ اجْتَمَعَ أَصْحَابُهُ فَدَعَاه فَقَالَ مِمَّنْ ابْتَعْتَ الْأَرْضَ؟ قَالَ مِنْ أَرْبَابِهَا قَالَ «هَل بِعْتُمُوهُ شَيْئًا؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَرْبَابُهَا فَرُدَّ الْأَرْضَ إِلَى مَنِ اشْتَرَيْتَ واقْبِضَ الثَّمَنَ»

When evening came, his companions gathered, so he called him and said, “From whom did you purchase the land?” He said, “From its owners.” He said, “Did they sell you anything?” They said, “No.” He said, “These are its owners, so return the land to the one from whom you bought it and take back the money.”
