حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ الْحَوْطِيُّ وَأَبُو زَيْدٍ الْحَوْطِيُّ قَالَا ثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ ضَمْضَمِ بْنِ زُرْعَةَ عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ قَالَ
عُتْبَةُ بْنُ عَبْدٍ السُّلَمِيُّ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِذَا أَتَاهُ الرَّجُلُ وَلَهُ الِاسْمُ لَا يُحِبُّهُ حَوَّلَهُ وَلَقَدْ أَتَيْنَاهُ وَإِنَّا لَسَبْعَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ أكْبَرُنَا الْعِرْبَاضُ بْنُ سَارِيَةَ فَبَايَعْنَاهُ جَمِيعًا مَعًا»

✧ ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd al-Sulami: When a man came to the Prophet ﷺ with a name he disliked, he would change it. We came to him—we were seven from Banu Sulaym, the eldest of us being al-ʿIrbad b. Sariyah—and we all pledged allegiance to him together."
