حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ قَالَ
«ثُمَّ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَيْشًا إِلَى مُؤْتَةَ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ فَإِنْ أُصِيبَ زَيْدٌ فَإِنَّ أَمِيرَهُمْ جَعْفَرٌ فَإِنْ أُصِيبَ جَعْفَرٌ فَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ أَمِيرُهُمْ فَخَرَجُوا قِبَلَ الشَّامِ نَحْوَ مُؤْتَةَ فَأُصِيبَ أُمَرَاؤُهُمُ الَّذِينَ أَمَّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الرَّايَةَ فَاصْطَلَحَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ عَلَيْهِ فَهَزَمَ اللهُ الْعَدُوَّ»
Translation

✧ Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army to Mu'tah and appointed Zaid bin Haritha as their commander. If Zaid is killed, then their leader will be Jafar. If Jafar is killed, then Abdullah bin Rawaha al-Ansari will be their leader. They set out towards Mu'tah going towards Sham (Levant). Their commanders, who were appointed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, were killed. Khalid bin Walid then took the flag and the Muslims agreed to it. Allah granted the Muslims victory over the enemy.
