حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبَّادٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي الَّذِي أَرْضَعَنِي وَكَانَ أَحَدَ بَنِي مُرَّةَ بْنِ عَوْفٍ وَكَانَ فِي تِلْكَ الْغَزَاةِ غَزْوَةِ مُؤْتَةَ قَالَ
وَاللهِ لَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى جَعْفَرٍ حِينَ اقْتَحَمَ عَنْ فَرَسٍ لَهُ شَقْرَاءَ ثُمَّ عَقَرَهَا ثُمَّ قَاتَلَ الْقَوْمَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ فَلَمَّا قُتِلَ جَعْفَرٌ أَخَذَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ الرَّايَةَ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَ بِهَا وَهُوَ عَلَى فَرَسِهِ فَجَعَلَ يَسْتَنْزِلُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَرَدَّدُ بَعْضَ التَّرَدُّدِ ثُمَّ قَالَ

✧ By Allah, it is as if I am looking at Jaʿfar when he plunged from a sorrel horse of his, then hamstrung it, then fought the people until he was killed. When Jaʿfar was killed, ʿAbd Allah b. Rawahah took the banner, then advanced with it while he was on his horse. He began trying to make himself dismount, and he hesitated somewhat, then he said:
