حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِلَالِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ قَالَ
إِنَّا لَنَجِدُ صِفَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا وَحِرْزًا لِلْأُمِّيِّينَ أَنْتَ عَبْدِي وَرَسُولُهُ سَمَّيْتُكَ الْمُتَوَكِّلَ لَيْسَ بِفَظٍّ وَلَا غَلِيظٍ وَلَا سَخَّابٍ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ وَلَا يُجْزِئُ السَّيِّئَةَ مِثْلَهَا وَلَكِنْ يَعْفُو وَيَصْفَحُ وَيَتَجَاوَزُ وَلَنْ أَقْبِضَكَ حَتَّى أُقِيمَ الْمِلَّةَ الْمُعْوَجَّةَ بِأَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَفْتَحُ بِهَا أَعْيُنًا عُمْيًا وَآذَانًا صُمًّا وَقُلُوبًا غُلْفًا قَالَ عَطَاءُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيُّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ كَعْبَ الْأَحْبَارِ يَقُولُ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ ابْنُ سَلَامٍ

✧ “Indeed we find the description of the Messenger of God ﷺ: ‘We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good tidings, and a warner, and a protection for the unlettered. You are My servant and His messenger. I have named you al-Mutawakkil. He is not harsh, nor hard-hearted, nor clamorous in the markets, nor does he repay evil with its like; rather he pardons, forgives, and overlooks. And I will not take you until I have straightened the crooked creed by your testifying that there is no god but God, by which He opens blind eyes, deaf ears, and covered hearts.’” ʿAtaʾ b. Yasar said: Abu Waqid al-Laythi informed me that he heard Kaʿb al-Ahbar say the like of what Ibn Salam said.
