حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ وَخَلَفُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْعُكْبَرِيُّ قَالَا ثنا مُعَلَّى بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ الْمَوْصِلِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ لَيْثِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ
لَقَدْ أَتَى عَلَيْنَا زَمَانٌ وَمَا يَرَى أَحَدُنَا أَنَّهُ أَحَقُّ بِالدِّينَارِ وَالدِّرْهَمِ مِنْ أَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِآخِرِهِ أَصْبَحْنَا وَالدِّينَارُ وَالدِّرْهَمُ أَحَبُّ إِلَى أَحَدِنَا مِنْ أَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِذَا ضَنَّ النَّاسُ بِالدِّينَارِ وَالدِّرْهَمِ وَتَبَايَعُوا بِالْعِينَةِ وَتَبِعُوا أَذْنَابَ الْبَقَرِ أَرْسَلَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ذُلًّا لَا يَرْفَعُهُ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّى يُرَاجِعُوا دِينَهُمْ»

✧ A time came upon us when none of us thought he was more entitled to the dinar and the dirham than his Muslim brother. Then, when we reached the latter part of it, we awoke and the dinar and the dirham became dearer to one of us than his Muslim brother. And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “When people become miserly with the dinar and the dirham, deal in ʿīnah, and follow the tails of cattle, Allah will send upon them humiliation that He will not lift from them until they return to their religion.”
