✧ Two men came to the Prophet ﷺ, one of them from the Ansar and the other from Thaqif. The Ansari preceded him, so the Prophet ﷺ said to the Thaqafi: “O brother of Thaqif, the Ansari has preceded you.” The Ansari said: “I will start with him, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said to him: “O brother of Thaqif, ask about your need, and if you wish, I will tell you what you have come to ask about.” He said: “That would be more pleasing to me for you to do.” He said: “You ask me about your prayer, your bowing, your prostration, and your fasting, and you say: What is in it for me?” He said: “Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth.” He said: “Pray the first part of the night and its last part, and sleep in its middle.” He said: “What if I pray in its middle?” He said: “You then…” He said: “When you stand for prayer and bow, place your hands on your knees, spread your fingers, then raise your head until every limb returns to its joint. When you prostrate, place your forehead firmly on the ground and do not peck. Fast the white nights: the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth.” Then he turned to the Ansari and said: “Ask about your need, and if you wish, I will tell you.” He said: “That would be more pleasing to me.” He said: “You have come to ask me about your leaving your house heading for the Sacred House, and you say: What is in it for me? You have come to ask about your standing at ʿArafah, and you say: What is in it for me? About your throwing the pebbles, and you say: What is in it for me? About your circumambulation of the House, and you say: What is in it for me? About your shaving your head, and you say: What is in it for me?” He said: “Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth.” He said: “As for your leaving your house heading for the House, for every step your mount takes, Allah records a good deed for you and wipes away a sin from you. As for your standing at ʿArafah, Allah ﷻ descends to the lowest heaven and boasts of them to the angels, saying: ‘These are My servants who have come to Me disheveled and dusty from every deep ravine, hoping for My mercy and fearing My punishment, though they have not seen Me. How would it be if they had seen Me? If you had sins like the sand of ʿAlij, or like the days of the world, or like the drops of rain, Allah would wash them away from you.’ As for your throwing the pebbles, it is stored up for you. As for your shaving your head, for every hair that falls you have a good deed. When you circumambulate the House, you come out of your sins as on the day your mother gave birth to you.”
