حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الْحَجَبِيُّ ثنا حَزْمٌ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ طَلِيقَ بْنَ خَشَّافٍ يَقُولُ وَفَدْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَنَنْظُرَ فِيمَ قُتِلَ عُثْمَانُ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَرَّ مِنَّا بَعْضٌ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ وَبَعْضٌ إِلَى الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ؓ وَبَعْضٌ إِلَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؓنَّ فَانْطَلَقْتُ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهَا فَرَدَّتِ السَّلَامَ فَقَالَتْ

وَمَنِ الرَّجُلُ؟ قُلْتُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ فَقَالَتْ مِنْ أَيِّ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ؟ قُلْتُ مِنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ قَالَتْ مِنْ أَيِّ بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ؟ قُلْتُ مِنْ بَنِي قَيْسِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ قَالَتْ أَمِنْ أَهْلِ فُلَانٍ؟ فَقُلْتُ لَهَا يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِيمَ قُتِلَ عُثْمَانُ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؓ؟ قَالَتْ «قُتِلَ وَاللهِ مَظْلُومًا لَعَنَ اللهُ قَتَلَتَهُ أَقَادَ اللهُ ابْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِهِ وَسَاقَ اللهُ إِلَى أَعْيُنِ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ هَوَانًا فِي بَيْتِهِ وَأَهْرَاقَ اللهُ دِمَاءَ بَنِي بُدَيْلٍ عَلَى ضَلَالَةٍ وَسَاقَ اللهُ إِلَى الْأَشْتَرِ سَهْمًا مِنْ سِهَامِهِ» فَوَاللهِ مَا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ إِلَّا أَصَابَتْهُ دَعْوَتُهَا

✧ And who is the man? I said: From the people of Basra. She said: From which people of Basra? I said: From Bakr b. Wa’il. She said: From which Bakr b. Wa’il? I said: From Banu Qays b. Tha’labah. She said: Are you from the household of so-and-so? I said to her: O Mother of the Believers, for what reason was Uthman, the Commander of the Believers ؓ, killed? She said: “By Allah, he was killed unjustly. May Allah curse his killers. May Allah exact retribution for him from Ibn Abi Bakr. May Allah drive humiliation into the eyes of Banu Tamim in his house. May Allah shed the blood of Banu Budayl upon error. May Allah send to al-Ashtar an arrow from His arrows.” For by Allah, there was no man among those people but her supplication struck him.
