حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الرَّازِيُّ ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ خَلَفِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ مِرْسَالٍ الْخَثْعَمِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مِرْسَالٍ عَنْ أَبِي زُمَيْلٍ الْحَنَفِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ لَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَلَا يُفَاتِحُونَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثٌ أُعْطِيكَهُنَّ عِنْدِي أَحْسَنُ الْعَرَبِ وَأَجْمَلُهُ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ أُزَوِّجُكَهَا قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَتَجْعَلُ مُعَاوِيَةَ كَاتِبًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَتُؤَمِّرُنِي أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ الْكُفَّارَ كَمَا كُنْتُ أُقَاتِلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»
Translation

✧ The Muslims would not look at Abu Sufyan or initiate conversation with him. He said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, three things I will give you: I have the finest and most beautiful Arab woman, Umm Habibah; I will give her to you in marriage.” He said: “Yes.” He said: “And make Muāwiyah a scribe before you.” He said: “Yes.” He said: “And appoint me as a commander to fight the disbelievers just as I used to fight the Muslims.” He said: “Yes.”
