حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ السَّامِيُّ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ قَالَ
قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ كَمْ أَتَى لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ مَاتَ؟ قَالَ مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى مِثْلَكَ مِنْ قَوْمٍ يَخْفَى عَلَيْكَ ذَلكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدْ سَأَلْتُ فَاخْتَلَفَ عَلَيَّ فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَعْلَمَ قَوْلَكَ فِيهِ قَالَ أَتَحْسِبُ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «خُذْ أَرْبَعِينَ بُعِثَ لَهَا وَخَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ مُقَامُهُ بِمَكَّةَ يَأْمَنُ وَيَخَافُ وَعَشْرًا مُهَاجَرُهُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ»

✧ I said to Ibn ʿAbbās, "How old was the Messenger of God ﷺ when he died?" He said, "I did not think someone like you among a people would be unaware of that." I said, "I asked, and people differed, so I wanted to know your statement about it." He said, "Can you calculate?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Take forty: he was sent at that age, and fifteen: his stay in Makkah, feeling secure and fearing, and ten: his emigration in Madinah."
