حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ قَالَ
خَرَجْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَلَمَّا نَزَلْنَا بِبَطْنِ نَخْلٍ رَأَيْنَا الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ هُوَ ابْنُ لَيْلَتَيْنِ فَأَتَيْنَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْنَا إِنَّا رَأَيْنَا الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ لَيْلَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَدَّهُ لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَهُوَ لَيْلَةَ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ»

✧ We set out as pilgrims, and when we camped at Batn Nakhl, we sighted the crescent. Some of the people said, 'It is three nights old,' and others said, 'It is two nights old.' We came to Ibn Abbas and said, 'We sighted the crescent; some of the people said it is three nights old, and others said it is two nights old.' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ extended it for its sighting, so it is [counted] on the night you sighted it.'
