✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dug the trench while his companions had tied stones to their bellies out of hunger. When the Prophet ﷺ saw that, he said: "Have you been shown a man who can give us a meal?" A man said: "Yes." He said: "As for no, go ahead and show us to him." So they went to the man, and there he was in the trench working on his portion of it. His wife sent word: "Come, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has come to us." The man came running and said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for him." He had a she-goat with her kid, so he jumped to her. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The kid is behind us." So he slaughtered the kid. The woman went to some flour she had, kneaded it, and baked it. She brought the pot and crumbled her large bowl, then brought it near to the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. The Prophet ﷺ placed his finger in it and said: "In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless it. Eat." They ate from it until they had their fill, yet they ate only a third of it and two-thirds remained. Then he sent those ten who were with him: "Go and send us your number." So they went, and those ten came in their place. They ate from it until they were full. Then the Prophet ﷺ stood and supplicated for the lady of the house, and pronounced blessings upon her and her household. Then they walked to the trench, and he said: "Take us to Salman." There was a rock in front of him that he had been unable to break. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: "Leave me, so that I may be the first to strike it." He said: "In the name of Allah," and struck it, and a piece, a third of it, fell off. He said: "Allah is greatest! The palaces of Rome, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!" Then he struck again, and another piece fell off. He said: "Allah is greatest! The palaces of Persia, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!" At that point the hypocrites said: "We are digging a trench for our own protection, and he is promising us the palaces of Persia and Rome!"
