✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned from the expedition of Tabuk and performed 'Umrah, and when he descended from the pass of 'Usfan, he commanded his companions to lean back against the mountain pass until he returned to them. He went and stopped at his mother's grave, and he conversed privately with his Lord for a long time. Then he wept, and his weeping intensified, and they wept because of his weeping. They said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ has not wept in this place except that something has happened in his community that they cannot bear." When they wept, he stood and returned to them and said, "What makes you weep?" They said, "O Prophet of God, we wept because of your weeping. We thought that perhaps something had happened in your community that they cannot bear." He said, "No, though some of it has occurred. But I stopped at my mother's grave and asked God to permit me to intercede for her on the Day of Resurrection, but God refused to permit me. So I felt mercy for her—she is my mother—and I wept. Then Jibril ﷺ came to me and said, {And Abraham's seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of God, he disowned him}. So disown your mother as Abraham disowned his father. I felt mercy for her—she is my mother—and I called upon my Lord to lift four things from my community. He lifted two and refused to lift two. I called upon my Lord to lift from them stoning from the sky and drowning from the earth, and that He not divide them into factions, and that He not make them taste the might of one another. God lifted from them stoning from the sky and drowning from the earth, but God refused to lift two: killing and chaos. He turned to his mother's grave only because she was buried under such-and-such, and 'Usfan was theirs."
