حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ عَنْ حُرَيْثٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ وَالْبَرَاءِ قَالَا

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا ثَلَاثِينَ وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا يَعْنِي تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ

Translation

  6. Masrūq And al-Barāʾ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Fast upon seeing it, and break your fast upon seeing it. If it is obscured to you, then complete thirty." And he said with his hand: "The month is like this and like this," meaning twenty-nine.
