حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الصَّائِغُ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَلَمَةَ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ
أَنَّ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ أُمَيَّةَ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ فَنَامَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَوَضَعَ خَمِيصَةً لَهُ تَحْتَ رَأْسِهِ فَأَتَى سَارِقٌ فَسَرَقَها فَجَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ يُقْطَعَ فَقَالَ صَفْوَانُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هِي لَهُ قَالَ «فَهَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ»

✧ Safwan b. Umayyah came to Madinah and slept in the mosque, placing a khamisah (a striped cloak) of his under his head. A thief came and stole it. He went to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered that the thief's hand be cut off. Safwan said: “O Messenger of God, it is his.” He said: “Why did you not say so before you brought him to me?”
