حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَاقِي الْأَذَنِيُّ ثنا أَبُو عُمَيْرِ بْنُ النَّحَّاسِ ثنا ضَمْرَةُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ شَوْذَبٍ عَنْ مَطَرٍ الْوَرَّاقِ عَنْ زَهْدَمٍ الْجَرْمِيِّ قَالَ كُنَّا فِي سَمَرِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ
إِنِّي مُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ لَيْسَ بِسِرٍّ وَلَا عَلَانِيَةٍ إِنَّهُ لَمَّا كَانَ مِنْ أَمْرِ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ مَا كَانَ يَعْنِي عُثْمَانَ قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ اعْتَزِلْ؛ فَلَوْ كُنْتَ فِي جُحْرٍ طُلِبْتَ حَتَّى تُسْتَخْرَجَ فَعَصَانِي وَايْمُ اللهِ لَيَتَأَمَّرَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ مُعَاوِيَةُ وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يَقُولُ {وَمَنْ قُتِلَ مَظْلُومًا فَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا لِوَلِيِّهِ سُلْطَانًا فَلَا يُسْرِفْ فِي الْقَتْلِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ مَنْصُورًا} وَلَتَحْمِلَنَّكُمْ قُرَيْشٌ عَلَى سُنَّةِ فَارِسَ وَالرُّومِ وَلَيَتَمَنَّنَ عَلَيْكُمُ النَّصَارَى وَالْيَهُودُ وَالْمَجُوسُ فَمَنْ أَخَذَ مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَا يَعْرِفُ نَجَا وَمَنْ تَرَكَ وَأَنْتُمْ تَارِكُونَ كُنْتُمْ كَقَرْنٍ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ فِيمَنْ هَلَكَ

✧ I will tell you a discourse that is neither secret nor open. When there happened concerning this man what happened—meaning ʿUthmān—I said to ʿAlī: “Withdraw; for if you were in a hole, you would be sought until you are brought out.” But he disobeyed me. By Allah, Muʿāwiyah will surely rule over you, and that is because Allah ﷻ says: {And whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his heir authority, so let him not exceed in killing; indeed he is helped}. And the Quraysh will surely make you follow the way of Persia and Rome, and the Christians, the Jews, and the Magians will surely wish for you. So whoever among you then holds to what he knows will be saved, and whoever leaves it—and you will leave it—you will be like a generation among the generations that perished.”
