حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ قَالَ أَخْرَجَ إِلَيَّ مَعْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ كِتَابًا فَحَلَفَ لِي

أَنَّهُ خَطُّ أَبِيهِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بِيَدِهِ فَإِذَا فِيهِ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ «وَاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَشَدَّ عَلَى الْمُتَنَطِّعِينَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ»

Translation

✧ That it was in the handwriting of his father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, written with his own hand, and in it ʿAbdullāh said: “By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, I have not seen anyone harsher against the overly scrupulous than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
