✧ I had dates of low quality, so I purchased with them from the market better dates for half their measure. I presented them to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “I have not seen today dates better than these. Where did you get these, O Bilal?” He said: I told him what I had done. He said: “Go and return them to their owner, take your dates, sell them for wheat or barley, then buy these dates with that, then bring them to me.” He said: I did so. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Dates for dates, equal for equal; wheat for wheat, equal for equal; barley for barley, equal for equal; salt for salt, equal for equal; gold for gold, equal for equal, weight for weight; silver for silver, equal for equal, weight for weight. Whatever is in excess is ribā.”
