حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْمُؤَدِّبُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ:

بَيْنَمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ إِذْ سَمِعَ مُنَادِيًا يَقُولُ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، فَقَالَ: عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ، فَقَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، فَقَالَ: شَهِدْتَ بِشَهَادَةِ الْحَقِّ، فَقَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ: خَرَجَ مِنَ النَّارِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: انْظُرُوا فَسَتَجِدُونَهُ رَاعِيًا مَعْزِيًا، وَإِمَّا مُكَلِّبًا، حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، فَنَادَى بِهَا، فَنَظَرُوا، فَوَجَدُوهُ رَاعِيًا

✧ While the Prophet ﷺ was on one of his journeys, he heard a caller saying: 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.' He said: 'Upon the fitrah (natural disposition).' Then he said: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah).' He said: 'You have testified to the testimony of truth.' Then he said: 'Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).' He said: 'He has come out of the Fire.' Then he said: 'Look, you will find him to be a shepherd of goats or a keeper of dogs.' The time for prayer came, so he called it, and they looked and found him to be a shepherd.
