حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الطَّلْحِيُّ الْكُوفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْقُمِّيُّ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ جَارِيَةَ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ ؓ قَالَ:

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ثَمَانَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَوْتَرَ، فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ الْقَابِلَةُ اجْتَمَعْنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرَجَوْنَا أَنْ يَخْرُجَ، فَلَمْ نَزَلْ فِيهِ حَتَّى أَصْبَحْنَا، ثُمَّ دَخَلْنَا، فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اجْتَمَعْنَا الْبَارِحَةَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، وَرَجَوْنَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِنَا، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي خَشِيتُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ عَلَيْكُمْ

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ led us in prayer during the month of Ramadan, eight rakʿahs, and then performed witr. The following night we gathered in the mosque hoping he would come out, and we remained there until morning. Then we entered upon him and said, 'O Messenger of God, we gathered last night in the mosque hoping that you would pray with us.' He said, 'I feared that it would be made obligatory upon you.'
