✧ Barira was manumitted while she had a husband, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the choice. Barira was given some meat as charity, so they hung it up, and they brought food other than the meat to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: “Did I not see meat with you?” They said: “It is only something that was given as charity to Barira.” He said: “For Barira it is charity, and for us it is a gift.” Barira came to Aisha seeking her help with her kitaba (contract of manumission). Aisha said to her: “If your owners wish, I will buy you and pay your price on your behalf in one payment.” Barira went to her owners and told them that. They said: “And your wala’ will be for us.” She came to Aisha and said: “They say your wala’ will be for us.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Buy her, for the wala’ belongs to the one who manumits.”
