✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ died, and Abu Bakr was made successor, and some Arabs disbelieved, Umar said: “O Abu Bakr, how can you fight the people when the Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: There is no god but God. Whoever says: There is no god but God has protected from me his property and his life, except by its right, and his reckoning is with God’?” Abu Bakr said: “I will certainly fight those who separate prayer from zakāt. By God, if they withhold from me a young goat that they used to give to the Messenger of God ﷺ, I will fight them for withholding it.” Umar said: “By God, it was only that I saw God had opened Abu Bakr's chest to fighting, and I knew it was the truth.”
