✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray the 'atamah (night prayer), then pray in the mosque before returning home seven rak'ahs, saying the salam in the four every two rak'ahs, and performing witr with three, reciting the tashahhud in the first two of the witr as he did at the final salam, and performing witr with the mu'awwidhat (the last three surahs of the Quran). Then when he returned home, he would pray two rak'ahs and sleep. When he woke from his sleep, he would say: 'Praise be to Allah who made me sleep in well-being and woke me in well-being.' Then he would raise his head to the sky and reflect, then say: 'Our Lord, You have not created this in vain. Glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.' Then he would recite until he reached: 'Indeed, You do not break Your promise.' Then he would perform ablution, then stand and pray two rak'ahs, prolonging the recitation, bowing, and prostration, and making abundant supplication in them, so much so that I would sleep and wake up. Then he would finish and lie down and doze, then turn over and speak like he had spoken the first time. Then he would stand and pray two rak'ahs that were longer than the first two, with even more humble supplication and seeking of forgiveness, until I would say: 'Will he finish?' That would continue until the end of the night. Then he would finish and doze a little, and I would say: 'Has he dozed or not?' until the muezzin came to him. Then he would say the same as he had said the first time, then sit and call for the siwak, clean his teeth, perform ablution, then pray two light rak'ahs, then go out to the prayer. Thus his prayer was thirteen rak'ahs.
