✧ I, Tawus al-Yamani, Amr b. Dinar al-Makki, Mak-hul al-Shami, and al-Hasan al-Basri gathered in the mosque of al-Khayf, and we discussed divine decree until our voices rose and our clamor increased. Tawus stood up and said: "Listen, I will tell you what I heard Abu al-Darda relate from the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: God has imposed obligations upon you, so do not neglect them; He has set limits for you, so do not transgress them; He has forbidden you things, so do not violate them; and He has remained silent about things out of mercy, not out of forgetfulness, so do not burden yourselves with them. Accept them. All matters are in the hand of God; from God is their origin, and to Him is their return. The servants have no authority or will in them."
