✧ Horses were sent out during the time of al-Hajjaj, while al-Hakam b. Ayyub was governor of Basra. When the horses came, we said: “Let us go to Anas b. Malik and ask him: O Abu Hamzah, did you used to hold horse races for stakes during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ?” So we came to him while he was in his palace at al-Zawiyah, and we asked him: “O Abu Hamzah, did you used to hold horse races for stakes during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ? Did the Messenger of God ﷺ race for stakes?” He said: “Yes, by God, he raced a horse of his called Subhah, and it beat the people, and he rejoiced at that and was pleased.”
