✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ one day and saw him looking changed. I said, "May my father and mother be your ransom, why do I see you looking changed?" He said, "Nothing has entered my stomach for three days that enters the stomach of any living being." So I went and found a Jew watering his camels. I drew water for him, for each bucket a date. I gathered dates and brought them to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "Where did you get this, O Kaʿb?" I told him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you love me, O Kaʿb?" I said, "May my father be your ransom, yes." He said, "Poverty comes faster to one who loves me than a flood to its destination. And affliction will befall you, so prepare for it a coat of armor." Then the Prophet ﷺ missed him and said, "What has Kaʿb done?" They said, "He is sick." He went out walking until he entered upon him and said, "Rejoice, O Kaʿb." His mother said, "Congratulations on Paradise, O Kaʿb." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Who is this swearing by God?" He said, "She is my mother, O Messenger of God." He said, "What makes you know, O mother of Kaʿb? Perhaps Kaʿb said what does not benefit him, or withheld what does not avail him."
