حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ، نَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ - سَجَّادَةُ ثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ
أَنَّ عَلِيًّا، بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ قَوْمًا بِالْبَصْرَةِ ارْتَدُّوا عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمْ، فَأُتِيَ بِهِمْ فَأَمَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الطَّعَامَ جُمْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ دَعَاهُمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَأَبَوْا، فَحَفَرَ عَلَيْهِمْ حُفْرَةً، ثُمَّ قَامَ عَلَيْهَا، فَقَالَ: " لَأَمْلَأَنَّكِ شَحْمًا وَلَحْمًا "، ثُمَّ أَتَى بِهِمْ فَضَرَبَ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ، وَأَلْقَاهُمْ فِي الْحُفْرَةِ، ثُمَّ أَلْقَى عَلَيْهِمُ الْحَطَبَ فَأَحْرَقَهُمْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. قَالَ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ غَفَلَةَ: فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ اتَّبَعْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. فَقَالَ: " وَيْحَكَ، إِنَّ حَوَالَيَّ قَوْمًا جُهَّالًا، وَلَكِنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتَنِي أَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَلَأَنْ أَخِرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقُولَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ
Translation

✧ It reached ʿAlī that some people in al-Baṣrah had apostatized from Islam. He sent for them and they were brought to him. He inclined food toward them for two weeks, then called them to Islam, but they refused. So he dug a pit for them, then stood over it and said: "I will surely fill you with fat and flesh." Then he brought them, struck their necks, and threw them into the pit. Then he threw firewood upon them and burned them. Then he said: God and His Messenger have spoken truly. Suwayd b. Ghafalah said: When he departed, I followed him and said: I heard you say: God and His Messenger have spoken truly. He said: "Woe to you, around me are ignorant people, but when you hear me say: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, then falling from the sky is dearer to me than saying about the Messenger of God ﷺ what he did not say."
