حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ: ثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى الضَّرِيرُ: نَا شَبَابَةُ، عَنْ وَرْقَاءَ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ:

سَمِعْتُ الْحَجَّاجَ يَخْطُبُ، فَذَكَرَ شَيْئًا أَنْكَرْتُهُ، فَذَكَرْتُ مَقَالَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمُؤْمِنِ أَنْ يُذِلَّ نَفْسَهُ. قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كَيْفَ يُذِلُّ نَفْسَهُ ؟ قَالَ: يَتَعَرَّضُ مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ لِمَا لَا يُطِيقُ

✧ I heard al-Hajjaj delivering a sermon and he mentioned something I disapproved of. I then mentioned the saying of the Messenger of God ﷺ: It is not fitting for a believer to humiliate himself. I said: O Messenger of God, how does he humiliate himself? He said: He exposes himself to trials he cannot bear.
