حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ السِّمْسَارُ قَالَ: نَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ قَالَ: أَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، قَالَ:

كُنَّا فِي مَسِيرٍ لَنَا، فَوَجَدْنَا سَوْطًا، فَأَخَذَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ، فَنَهَيْنَاهُ فَأَبَى، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ لَقِينَا أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: وَجَدْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِائَةَ دِينَارٍ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا، فَقَالَ: عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الْحَوْلُ أَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا، فَقَالَ: " عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً أُخْرَى "، فَفَعَلْتُ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الْحَوْلُ أَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا بَعْدَ ثَلَاثِ سِنِينَ، فَقَالَ: " اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِدَّتَهَا، ثُمَّ اسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَ لَهَا طَالِبٌ فَأَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ

Translation

✧ We were on a journey of ours, and we found a whip. A man from the group took it, but we told him not to, and he refused. When we came to Madinah, we met Ubayy b. Ka'b and mentioned that to him. He said: 'I found one hundred dinars at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I brought them to him. He said: "Announce it for a year." When the year was complete, I brought them to him, and he said: "Announce it for another year." I did so. When the year was complete, I brought them to him after three years. He said: "Note its tie and its number, then make use of it. If someone comes seeking it, give it to him."'
