✧ I went out one day with ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar, and a Bedouin caught up with him and said to him: "The saying of Allah: 'And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the cause of Allah' [Quran 9:34]." Ibn ʿUmar said: "Whoever hoards them and does not pay their zakat, then woe to him. This was only before the zakat was revealed. When it was revealed, Allah made it a purification for wealth." Then he turned and said: "I would not care if I had gold the size of Uhud, whose amount I knew, and I paid zakat on it and worked with it in obedience to Allah."
