✧ When the Khawārij separated from ʿAlī, he went out in pursuit of them, and we went out with him. We reached the army of the people, and they had a humming like the humming of bees from reciting the Qur’an. Among them were people with calloused foreheads and people wearing burnooses. When I saw them, doubt entered me about that. So I withdrew, planted my spear, dismounted from my horse, placed my shield, and spread my armor over it. I took hold of my horse’s rein and stood praying facing my spear, saying in my prayer: “O God, if fighting these people is obedience to You, then permit it; and if it is disobedience, then show me Your innocence.” He said: While I was like that, ʿAlī came forward on the mule of the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he came alongside me, he said: “Seek refuge in God from doubt, O Jundub.” So I came hastening to him, and he dismounted and stood praying. Then a man came forward on a horse, galloping, and said: “O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “What do you want?” He said: “Do you have any need concerning the people?” He said: “And what is that?” He said: “They have crossed the river and gone.” He said: “They have not crossed it.” I said: “Glory be to God.” Then another came, faster in running, and said: “O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “What do you want?” He said: “Do you have any need concerning the people?” He said: “And what is that?” He said: “They have crossed the river and gone.” I said: “God is greater.” Then ʿAlī said: “They have not crossed it.” Then another came spurring his horse, and said: “O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “What do you want?” He said: “Do you have any need concerning the people?” He said: “And what is that?” He said: “They have crossed the river.” Then ʿAlī said: “They have not crossed it, and they will not cross it. They will surely be killed before it—a covenant from God and His Messenger.” I said: “God is greater.” Then I stood, held the stirrup for him, and he mounted his horse. Then I returned to my armor, put it on, went back to my horse, mounted it, put my foot in the stirrup, and went out walking alongside him. He said to me: “O Jundub.” I said: “At your service, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “As for me, I will send a man to them with the muṣḥaf, calling them to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet. He will not turn his face toward us until they shoot him with arrows. O Jundub, no ten of us will be killed and no ten of them will escape.” We came to the people while they were in their camp where they had been, not having moved. ʿAlī called out among his companions and arranged them in rows, then came to the row from one end to the other twice, saying: “Who will take this muṣḥaf, go with it to these people, call them to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet, and he will be killed, and for him is Paradise?” No one answered him except a young man from Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿa. When ʿAlī saw how young he was, he said to him: “Return to your place.” Then he called out a second time, and no one came out to him except that young man. Then he called out a third time, and no one came out to him except that young man. So ʿAlī said to him: “Take it.” He took the muṣḥaf, and ʿAlī said: “Indeed, you will be killed, and you will not turn your face toward us until they shoot you with arrows.” The young man went out walking with the muṣḥaf toward the people. When he drew near enough for them to hear, they stood up and began fighting before he could return. A man shot him with arrows, and he turned his face toward us and sat down. Then ʿAlī said: “Now attack the people.” Jundub said: “By this hand of mine, after the doubt that had entered me had passed, I killed eight before I prayed the noon prayer, and not ten of us were killed and not ten of them escaped, as he said.”
