✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced to us his own death, with my father as his ransom, a month before he died. When the parting drew near, he gathered us to him in the house of our mother ʿĀʾishah, then he looked at us, his eyes welled with tears, and he spoke firmly. He said: Welcome to you, may Allah keep you alive, have mercy on you, shelter you, help you, raise you, benefit you, guide you, provide for you, grant you success, keep you safe, and accept you. I enjoin upon you the fear of Allah, and I entrust you to Allah, and I appoint Him as successor over you. Indeed, I am to you a clear warner from Him. Do not exalt yourselves above Allah regarding His servants and His lands, for Allah said to me and to you: 'That is the abode of the Hereafter, which We assign to those who do not desire exaltation in the earth nor corruption, and the outcome is for the righteous.' And He said: 'Is there not in Hell a dwelling for the arrogant?' Then he said: 'The appointed time has drawn near, and the return is to Allah, to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, to the Garden of Refuge, to the highest companion, to the fullest cup, and to the good fortune and pleasant life.' We said: Who will wash you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: 'The men of my household, the nearest then the next nearest.' We said: How should we shroud you? He said: 'In these clothes of mine, if you wish, or in a Yemeni robe, or in white Egyptian cloth.' We said: Who among us will pray over you? Then we wept and he wept. Then he said: 'Gently, may Allah forgive you and reward you well on behalf of your Prophet. When you have washed me and shrouded me, place me on my bier in this house of mine at the edge of my grave. Then leave me for a while, for the first to pray over me will be my companion and close friend Jibrīl, then Mīkāʾīl, then Isrāfīl, then the Angel of Death with his hosts. Then enter to me in groups, pray over me and greet me with peace, and do not harm me with a wailing woman, nor with clamor, nor with lamentation. Let the men of my household and their women begin the prayer over me, then you. Convey abundant greetings from me to those of my companions who are absent, for I have indeed greeted those who pledged allegiance to me upon my religion until the Day of Resurrection.' We said: Who will place you in your grave? He said: 'My family along with many angels, who see you from where you do not see them.'
