✧ ʿUthmān b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Ṭalḥī al-Kūfī

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الطَّلْحِيُّ قَالَ: نَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ قَالَ: نَا يَعْقُوبُ الْقُمِّيُّ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ جَارِيَةَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ:

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ثَمَانِيَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَوْتَرَ، فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ الْقَابِلَةُ اجْتَمَعْنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، رَجَوْنَا أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِنَا قَالَ: إِنِّي خَشِيتُ، أَوْ كَرِهْتُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ عَلَيْكُمْ

Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed eight rak'ahs with us in the month of Ramadan and performed witr. The next night we gathered in the mosque, hoping he would pray with us. He said: I feared, or disliked, that it would be made obligatory upon you.
