✧ I said, 'O Messenger of God, tell me about the words of God, Mighty and Majestic: "And houris with wide eyes."' He said, 'Houris means fair ones; wide-eyed means large-eyed. The eyelashes of a houri are like the wing of an eagle.' I said, 'O Messenger of God, tell me about the words of God, Mighty and Majestic: "As though they were rubies and corals."' He said, 'Their purity is like the purity of pearls inside shells, untouched by hands.' I said, 'O Messenger of God, tell me about His words: "In them are good and beautiful ones."' He said, 'Good in character and beautiful in face.' I said, 'O Messenger of God, tell me about His words: "As though they were hidden eggs."' He said, 'Their delicacy is like the delicacy of the membrane inside the egg, next to the shell, which is the thin white skin.' I said, 'O Messenger of God, tell me about His words: "Loving and of equal age."' He said, 'They are those who were taken in the abode of this world as old, decrepit, grey-haired women. God created them after old age and made them virgins.' He said, 'Loving means affectionate and beloved. Of equal age means born at the same time.' I said, 'O Messenger of God, are the women of this world better or the houris of Paradise?' He said, 'The women of this world are better than the houris, as the outer garment is better than the lining.' I said, 'O Messenger of God, why is that?' He said, 'Because of their prayers, their fasting, and their worship of God, Mighty and Majestic. God will clothe their faces with light and their bodies with silk, white in color, green in garments, yellow in jewelry. Their incense burners are pearls, and their combs are gold. They say: "Surely we are eternal and will never die. Surely we are blissful and will never be miserable. Surely we are resident and will never depart. Surely we are content and will never be displeased. Glad tidings to the one for whom we are and who is for us."' I said, 'A woman among us may marry two, three, or four husbands, then die and enter Paradise, and they enter with her. Who among them will be her husband?' He said, 'O Umm Salamah, she will be given a choice and will choose the one with the best character among them, and she will say: "My Lord, this one had the best character with me in the abode of this world, so marry me to him." O Umm Salamah, good character has taken the good of this world and the Hereafter.'
