✧ Abu Talha came to Umm Sulaym, the mother of Anas b. Malik, and Abu Talha was his stepfather. He said: “Do you have anything, O Umm Sulaym? I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was teaching the people of the Suffa Surah al-Nisa’, and he had tied a stone to his stomach from hunger.” She said: “I had some barley, so I ground it, then sent me to the markets,” and the markets were their gardens, “so I brought them some firewood, and made it into a flat loaf. Then he said: ‘Do you have any condiment?’ She said: ‘I had a small skin of ghee, but I do not know if anything remains in it.’ I brought it to him and squeezed it. He said: ‘The squeezing of two is more effective than the squeezing of one.’ So they both squeezed it and extracted from it something like a date. She greased the loaf with it. Then he called me and said: ‘O Anas, seek out the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘I left him with the people of the Suffa teaching them. Invite him, but do not invite anyone else with him; be careful not to disgrace me.’ So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he saw me, he said: ‘Perhaps your father sent you to us?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He said to the people: ‘Go.’ They departed that day, and they were eighty men. He held my hand, and when I approached the house I pulled my hand from his. Abu Talha began looking for me in the house and throwing stones at me, saying: ‘You have disgraced me before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ Then he went out to him and told him the news. He said: ‘It will not harm you.’ Then he told them to sit, and they sat. Then he entered, and we brought him the loaf. He said: ‘Is there any condiment?’ Umm Sulaym said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we had a small skin, and Abu Talha and I squeezed it.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Bring it, for the squeezing of three is more effective than the squeezing of two.’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought it, and he squeezed it with them. They extracted from it something like a date, and they wiped the loaf with it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped it with his hand, then invoked blessing upon it. Then he said: ‘Invite ten for me.’ So I invited ten, and they ate until they belched from fullness. They kept entering ten by ten until they were all full. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat, and we sat with him, and we ate until there was leftover.”
