machine translationIt is narrated from Ibn Lahīʿah, from Isḥāq b. Abī Farwah, from Makḥūl in this way. But it was narrated by Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and al-Nuʿmān b. Makḥūl, from ʿAnbasah b. Abī Sufyān, from Umm Ḥabībah, and that is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version.

machine translationMakḥūl did not hear from ʿAnbasah b. Abī Sufyān, and Makḥūl narrated from a man, from ʿAnbasah, other than this hadith. It is as if he did not consider this hadith sound (ṣaḥīḥ). He said: Muḥammad said: The soundest thing I have heard on this subject is the hadith of al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith, from Makḥūl, from ʿAnbasah b. Abī Sufyān, from Umm Ḥabībah.
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088 - Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
machine translationThe soundest hadith on this subject is the hadith of al-Haytham b. Ḥumayd, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from Makḥūl, from ʿAnbasah, from Umm Ḥabībah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Whoever touches his penis, let him perform ablution." Then he remained silent.
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088 - Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
machine translationIts chain is good (ḥasan).
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088 - Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī
machine translationIbn Lahīʿah narrated in this hadith something that weakens it, that is, his narration indicates that Makḥūl inserted a man between himself and ʿAnbasah.
machine translationMakḥūl did not hear anything from ʿAnbasah. He said: They rely on the statement of Abū Mushir, so the hadith reverts to being disconnected (inqiṭāʿ), and they do not rely on what is disconnected (munqaṭiʿ).
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088 - Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim
صححه
machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088 - Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
machine translationThe hadith of Umm Ḥabībah on touching the penis as well, I do not reject it.
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088 - Ibn al-Sakan
machine translationI know of no defect in the hadith of Umm Ḥabībah, except that it was said that Makḥūl did not hear it from ʿUtbah b. Abī Sufyān.
in المعجم الأوسط, p. 3088
