✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ came to me, so I went out to him. I found him feverish, having bound his head with a cloth. He said: "Take my hand, O Fadl." So I took his hand until he reached the pulpit and sat upon it. Then he said to me: "Call out among the people." I called out among the people, and they gathered to him. He praised God, the Mighty and Majestic, and extolled Him. Then he said: "O people, it has come close to me that I should discharge my responsibilities from among you. Whoever I have flogged on the back, here is my back, let him take retaliation from it. Whoever I have insulted his honor, here is my honor, let him take retaliation from it. Whoever I have taken wealth from him, here is my wealth, let him take retaliation from it. Let no man say: 'I fear enmity from the side of the Messenger of God.' Indeed, enmity is not of my nature nor of my disposition. Indeed, the most beloved of you to me is the one who takes his right if there is one, or releases me, so that I meet God with a contented soul. Indeed, I do not consider that sufficient for me until I stand among you several times." Then he descended ﷺ and prayed Zuhr. Then he returned to the pulpit and repeated his speech concerning enmity and other matters. Then he said: "O people, whoever has anything with me, let him return it, and let him not say: 'It is the shame of this world.' Indeed, the shame of this world is better than the shame of the Hereafter." A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of God, I have three dirhams with you." He said: "We do not accuse a speaker of lying, nor do we ask him to swear an oath. How did it come to be that I owe you?" He said: "Do you remember the day a beggar passed by you and you ordered me, so I gave him three dirhams?" He said: "Give them to him, O Fadl." Then another man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of God, I have three dirhams which I had embezzled in the cause of God." He said: "Why did you embezzle them?" He said: "I was in need of them." He said: "Take them from him, O Fadl." Then he ﷺ said: "Whoever of you fears something, let him stand so that I may supplicate for him." A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of God, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and I am indeed given to excessive sleep." He said: "O God, provide him with truthfulness and faith, and remove from him sleep when he desires." Then another man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of God, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and there is nothing of all things but that I have done it." Umar said: "O this one, you have disgraced yourself." He said: "Hush, O son of al-Khattab, the disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter. O God, provide him with truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair to good." Umar spoke a word, so the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Umar is with me and I am with Umar, and the truth after me is with Umar wherever he is."
