✧ In the sermon of Utbah b. Ghazwan in Basrah: 'Indeed the world has announced its departure and is turning away swiftly. Nothing remains of it except a remnant like the dregs in a vessel which one of you pours out. Indeed you will inevitably depart from it, so depart with the best of what is with you. Indeed I was the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we had no food except tree leaves until our mouths became ulcerated. We have now become such that each of us is a ruler. I saw myself as one of seven who shared a cloak, tearing it into pieces among us. Indeed it is astonishing that a great rock is thrown into Hell and falls for seventy autumns without reaching its bottom. Indeed it is astonishing that the distance between two panels of the gates of Paradise is forty days, and a day will come upon it when it is crowded to suffocation.'
