✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the dwellings of Banu ‘Amr b. ‘Awf on a Wednesday, and he saw fortifications around their wealth and lands that he had not seen before. He said to them: ‘O assembly of the Ansar.’ They replied: ‘At your service, O Messenger of Allah, with our fathers and mothers [as ransom] for you.’ He said: ‘Would you, when you descend for your festival—meaning Friday—stay until you hear my words?’ They said: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, with our fathers and mothers [as ransom] for you.’ When Friday came, they attended the Friday prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he finished and performed two voluntary rak‘ahs at his place of prayer. Before that, when he prayed Friday, he would go to his house and pray those two rak‘ahs there. But on that day, he performed them as voluntary prayers in the mosque. When he finished, he turned to face them, and the Ansar followed him from the mosque until they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to them: ‘O assembly of the Ansar.’ They said: ‘At your service, O Messenger of Allah, with our fathers and mothers [as ransom] for you.’ He said: ‘In the time of ignorance, when Allah was not worshipped, you used to carry the burden [i.e., assist the weak] with your wealth, do good deeds, and maintain ties of kinship. Then when Allah blessed you with Islam and Muhammad ﷺ came, you began to fortify [your gardens]. In what the son of Adam eats there is reward, in what the bird eats there is reward, and in what the beast of prey eats there is reward.’ The people departed, and none remained except that he demolished two or three breaches in his wealth—meaning he demolished parts of the walls of their orchards—so that the poor could enter and eat from the dates.
