✧ Three men entered a cave, and a piece of rock fell over its mouth, sealing them in. One of them said, 'O people, recall which of you has done a good deed; perhaps God, by His mercy, will have mercy on us.' One of them said, 'I once did a good deed. I had workers whom I hired for a job of mine, each man for a fixed wage. One day a man came to me in the middle of the day, and I hired him for the rest of the day on the same terms as his companions. He worked in the remainder of his day as each of them had worked in his entire day. I considered it part of his due that I should not reduce for him anything of what I had hired his companions for, given his effort in his work. One of them said to me, "Will you give this man the same as you gave me, when he worked only half a day?" I said, "O servant of God, I have not cheated you of anything of your stipulated wage; it is my wealth, and I may dispose of it as I wish." He became angry at that, left his wage, and I set aside his due in a corner of the house for as long as God willed. Then later some cattle passed by me, and I bought with it a young calf. I kept it until it grew, then sold it, then used its price to buy a cow, which became pregnant, and its offspring multiplied until it reached what God willed. Then after a time a weak old man whom I did not recognize passed by me and said, "I have a right with you." He mentioned it until I recognized him, then I said, "Yes, it is you I have been seeking." I presented the entire herd to him and said, "This is your right." He said, "O servant of God, do not mock me. If you will not give me charity, then give me my due." I said, "By God, I am not mocking you. It is indeed your right; I have no share in it." So I handed it over to him. O God, if I did that for Your sake, then grant us relief.' The rock split open until they could see and perceive. The second said, 'I once did a good deed. I had surplus wealth, and the people were struck by hardship. A woman came to me seeking a favor. I said to her, "No, by God, it will not be less than your own self." She refused, then returned and reminded me of God, but I refused her, saying, "No, by God, it will not be less than your own self." She refused me. She mentioned that to her husband, and he said to her, "Give yourself to him and provide for our family." She came to me and adjured me by God, and I said to her, "No, by God, it will not be less than your own self." When she saw that, she submitted herself to me. When I uncovered her and intended to have intercourse with her, she trembled beneath me. I said, "What is the matter with you?" She said, "I fear God, the Lord of the worlds." I said to her, "You feared God in hardship, and I did not fear Him in ease." So I left her and gave her what was due from me for having uncovered her. O God, if I did that for Your sake, then grant us relief.' The mountain split open until they recognized and it became clear to them. The third said, 'I once did a good deed. I had two elderly parents and some sheep. I would feed my parents and give them drink, then return to my sheep. One day I was caught by rain, which detained me, and I did not return until evening. I came to my family, took my milking vessel, milked, and left my sheep standing. I went to my parents to give them drink, but found them asleep. It distressed me to wake them, and it distressed me to leave my sheep. I remained sitting with the milking vessel in my hands until dawn woke them. O God, if You know that I did that for Your sake, then grant us relief.' Al-Nu'man said, 'It is as if I hear the Messenger of God ﷺ saying: "The mountain said, 'Crack,' and God relieved them, and they came out."' This is as it appears in the Dar al-Haramayn edition, and its editor noted in the margin: "Thus in the original; the correct word is 'the mountain.'"
