✧ Abu Bakr went out in the midday heat, and Umar heard of that, so he went out and found Abu Bakr. He said: 'O Abu Bakr, what brought you out at this hour?' He said: 'By God, I find nothing in my belly but the pangs of hunger.' Umar said: 'And I, by God, nothing brought me out but that.' While they were like that, the Prophet ﷺ came out to them and said: 'What brought you two out at this hour?' They said: 'It brought us out; by God, we find nothing in our bellies but the pangs of hunger.' He said: 'And I, by the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing brought me out but that. So get up.' They got up and went off until they came to the door of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Abu Ayyub used to keep food for the Messenger of God ﷺ, whether it was food or milk, but on that day he was delayed and did not come at his usual time, so he fed it to his family and went off to his palm trees to work in them. When they came to the door of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a woman came out and said: 'Welcome to the Messenger of God and those with him.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said to her: 'Where is Abu Ayyub?' She said: 'He will come to you, O Prophet of God, this hour.' The Messenger of God ﷺ turned back, and Abu Ayyub saw him while he was working in his palm trees, so he came running until he caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: 'Welcome to the Prophet of God and those with him.' He said: 'O Messenger of God, this is not the time you used to come to me.' So the Prophet ﷺ returned, and he went to a cluster of dates and cut it down. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: 'What did you intend by this?' He said: 'O Messenger of God, I wanted you to eat from its fresh dates, its half-ripe dates, and its dry dates. And I will surely slaughter an animal for you along with it.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If you slaughter, do not slaughter a milch animal.' So he took a young goat or kid of his and slaughtered it, and said to his wife: 'Bake bread, and I will cook. You know more about baking.' He set to work on half of the kid and cooked it, and roasted the other half. When the food was ready, it was placed before the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions. The Messenger of God ﷺ took some of the kid and placed it on a loaf, and said: 'O Abu Ayyub, take this to Fatimah, for she has not had anything like this for days.' When they had eaten and were full, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Bread and meat and half-ripe dates and dry dates and fresh dates,' and his eyes filled with tears. Then he said: 'This is the comfort about which you will be asked on the Day of Resurrection.' That weighed heavily on his companions, so the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'When you obtain something like this and stretch out your hands, say: In the name of God and the blessing of God. And when you are full, say: Praise be to God who has fed us and quenched our thirst and bestowed blessings and favored us. For this is sufficient with this.' The Messenger of God ﷺ used never to have someone do him a known favor without wishing to repay him, so he said to Abu Ayyub: 'Come to us tomorrow.' Abu Ayyub did not hear him, so Umar said to him: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ is ordering you to come to him.' When he came to him, he gave him a slave girl, saying: 'O Abu Ayyub, take good care of her, for we have seen nothing but good as long as she was with us.' When Abu Ayyub brought her home, he said: 'I find no better way to fulfill the Messenger of God's ﷺ instruction than to set her free.' So he set her free.
