حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ قَرْقَرَةَ الْأَنْطَاكِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ سَيَّارٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ قَالَ: نَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ الْمَاجِشُونِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ:
لَمَّا مَاتَ ابْنُ آدَمَ، قَالَ آدَمُ لِامْرَأَتِهِ حَوَّاءَ: إِنَّهُ قَدْ مَاتَ ابْنُكِ، قَالَتْ: وَمَا الْمَوْتُ ؟ قَالَ: لَا يَطْعَمُ، وَلَا يَشْرَبُ، وَلَا يَمْشِي، وَلَا يَبْطِشُ، فَلَمَّا قَالَ ذَلِكَ صَرَخَتْ، فَقَالَ: الرَّنَّةُ عَلَيْكِ وَعَلَى بَنَاتِكِ، وَأَنَا وَبَنِيَّ بُرَآءُ، فَصَارَتِ الْمَوَاتِيمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ

✧ When the son of Adam died, Adam said to his wife Ḥawwā’: “Your son has died.” She said: “What is death?” He said: “He does not eat, he does not drink, he does not walk, and he does not strike.” When he said that, she wailed. He said: “Wailing is upon you and upon your daughters, while I and my sons are innocent of it.” Thus mourning became the practice of women.
