✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ became gravely ill, and I was with him among a group of Muslims, Bilal called him to prayer. He said, “Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” ʿAbd Allah b. Zamʿah said: I went out and found ʿUmar among the people, and Abu Bakr was absent. I said, “O ʿUmar, stand and lead the people in prayer.” He stood and said the takbir. The Messenger of God ﷺ heard his voice—and ʿUmar was a loud-voiced man—and said, “Where is Abu Bakr? God and the Muslims refuse that”—twice. Then he sent for Abu Bakr, who came after ʿUmar had prayed and then led the people in prayer. ʿAbd Allah b. Zamʿah said: ʿUmar said to me, “Woe to you! What have you done to me, O Ibn Zamʿah? By God, when you ordered me, I thought only that the Messenger of God ﷺ had commanded you to do that. Had it not been for that, I would not have led the people in prayer.” I said, “By God, the Messenger of God did not order me, but when I did not see Abu Bakr, I thought you were the most entitled of those present to lead the people in prayer.”
