"I came to the Prophet of God ﷺ and said: O Prophet of God, I have composed a poem in which I praised God and praised you. He said: As for what you praised God with, bring it; and as for what you praised me with, leave it. So I began to recite it to him, and a tall man with a prominent, curved nose came in. He said: Hold back. When the man left, he said: Go on. So I began to recite, and it was not long before he returned, and he said to me: Hold back. When he left, he said: Go on. I said: O Prophet of God, who is this who came in, for whom you said: Hold back, and when he left you said: Go on? He said: This is ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and he has nothing to do with falsehood."
