"The Prophet ﷺ was at the pond of Banū Ghifār, and Jibrīl came to him and said: Allah commands you that your Ummah recite the Qur'an in one mode. He said: I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness, for my Ummah is not able to do that. Then he came to him a second time and said: Allah commands you that your Ummah recite the Qur'an in two modes. He said: I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness, for my Ummah is not able to do that. Then he came to him a third time and said: Allah commands you that your Ummah recite the Qur'an in three modes. He said: I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness, for my Ummah is not able to do that. Then he came to him a fourth time and said: Allah commands you that your Ummah recite the Qur'an in seven modes, and whichever mode they recite in, they have been correct.".
