He said: Wāthilah b. al-Asqaʿ said to me: "Lead me to Yazīd b. al-Aswad, for it has reached me that an illness has befallen him." He said: So I led him, and he entered upon him while he was gravely ill and had been turned to face – meaning toward the qiblah – and his mind had gone. He said: "Call him." So they called him, and I said: "This is Wāthilah b. al-Asqaʿ, your brother." He said: God left some of his mind so that he heard that Wāthilah had come, and he stretched out his hand and began to feel about with it. I knew what he wanted, so I took the palm of Wāthilah and placed it in his palm. He only wanted to place his hand in the hand of Wāthilah, because of the place of Wāthilah's hand in the hand of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He kept placing it once on his chest, once on his face, and once on his mouth. Then Wāthilah said: "Will you not tell me about something I ask you about? How is your thought of God?" He said: "My sins have confronted me and I am on the brink of destruction, but I hope for the mercy of God." Wāthilah said "Allāhu akbar," and the people of the house said "Allāhu akbar" with his takbīr, and he said: "God is the Greatest! I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'God, Mighty and Majestic, says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, so let him think of Me as he wishes.'"
