machine translationAbū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us: al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq informed us: Abū ʿUthmān al-Khayyāṭ narrated to us, he said: I heard al-Ḥasan al-Hamdānī,

Machine translation, not reviewed

He said: A son of al-Rashīd died, so al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ wrote to him: "To proceed: O Commander of the Faithful, if you are able to make your thankfulness to Him when He took him from you better than your thankfulness to Him when He granted him to you, then do so. O Commander of the Faithful, when He, glorified be His praise, granted him to you, He had already taken back His gift; and had he remained with you, you would not have been safe from his trial. Consider your distress over him and your grief at parting from him: have you been pleased with this world for yourself and are you pleased with it for your son? As for him, he has been freed from turbidity, while you remain in peril."
